The blue heron is the largest heron in North America.  In flight he looks huge with a wingspan of six feet as he slowly flies over the water.  He is over a meter tall.  The blue heron can live to be seventeen years old.  While seen alone in this picture, the blue heron often nests in colonies which may contain up to 100 nesting pairs.  The male and female blue heron share nesting duties, working together to incubate the eggs, then to feed the young once they hatch.  When the weather starts to get colder the heron does like so many other birds: he leaves places like Temagami and heads south.  Banded birds from Canada have been found in Cuba, Honduras and Mexico.
