As soon as the ice begins to leave the shallower bays of Lake Temagami the common loon arrives. He is returning from a winter in the Gulf of Mexico or on the east or west coast of North America where the water doesn't freeze.
Loons can live to be thirty years old but they do not begin to breed until they reach five years of age.
