Nests built by the common loon are always right on the shore because movement on land is very awkward.  The loon can usually slide right from the nest into the water should the need arise.  The nest is built of whatever is close by: moss, leaves, evergreen needles or mud from the lake bottom.  The loon often returns to the same nest year after year.
