There are usually two eggs laid by the common loon which hatch after a month of incubation. Both the male and female loon take turns sitting on the eggs. Often only one of the babies survive. The loon chick can dive and swim underwater after only two to three days. Chicks will ride on a parent's back for rest and for protection from enemies.
