Believe it or not the blue jay belongs to the crow family. Every summer the blue jay moults, growing a brand new set of feathers by mid fall. He has been known to put ants on the underside of his wings while moulting. The exact reason for this is not known although some wonder if the ants somehow soothe the itching of the new growth of feathers.
