Snapping turtles aren't normally aggressive in the
water. If you should meet one on land you should keep a respectful
distance. They can put on quite a show if they feel threatened. They
will rise up on their hind legs and rock back and forth while hissing.
Then they will lunge forward and snap with their powerful jaws. If you
back off and leave them alone they will also back off and head for the safety of
the water.
